Honda Future Workforce

Passionate Participation

Honda is driven to provide opportunities for Passionate Participation programs at the high school level.

Honda feels it is important to provide opportunities for students to learn about manufacturing careers through curriculum, interacting with equipment and first-hand exposure to our manufacturing operations.

As students move from middle school into high school, our Honda Indiana plant and Indiana Next Generation Manufacturing Competitiveness Center (IN-MaC) have partnered to provide opportunities for students to discover new ways of thinking, to explore design, learn problem solving, and engage with new technology.

Honda is also actively engaged with schools in central Ohio as part of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers Education Foundation PRIME school initiative.  The participating schools receive funding from Honda for advanced curriculum, equipment purchases and upgrades, support of after school clubs and competitions and summer camp programs.

Honda was also a founding project member for the Marysville Early College STEM High School, located in Marysville, Ohio, that combines vocational learning experiences with college-level course work. This program allows students in the manufacturing pathway to earn credits toward a degree at Columbus State.  In its inception, Honda worked with the school to select lab equipment, lay out their classroom space, select an instructor and develop the curriculum. Students also get to interact with Honda technicians and engineers where they learn about exciting manufacturing careers through tours and know-how sharing.

For more than five years, Honda’s manufacturing operations across the country have participated in the national Manufacturing Day event. Every year, thousands of high school students walk through our plants to engage with Honda leadership, meet our team, play engineering games and tour our facilities.

Even outside of Manufacturing Day, Honda’s plants across the country open their doors to technical students in vocational schools and high school STEM related programs to tour the plants and see first-hand why manufacturing is cool.

In 2019, our Alabama plant was creative in the way they reached out to students. Honda associates built a 2019 Honda Passport SUV, live, on stage at the Honda Indy Grand Prix event. TheHonda Factory Pop-Upwelcomed more than 2,000 students from area schools for a close-up look at the manufacturing process.

Research shows that 84% of manufacturing executives agree there is a talent shortage in U.S. manufacturing, and this gap will be exacerbated by more than 2.7 million professionals exiting the manufacturing workforce through retirement over the next ten years. (Craig Giffi, vice chairman, Deloitte LLP, and U.S. automotive sector leader, 2015)
